Trailside Nibbles – Wild Grape Leaves

I found myself nibbling wild edibles from the trailside, while moving invisibly through the woods. This is how the Ancient Scouts could cover a vast distance, and evade hostile enemies. They didn’t have to stop and eat, they gently grazed from plants they knew well, while moving in harmony with their surroundings.”

Today, Carol and I enjoyed gently grazing walking along the river here in Connellsville. Walking softly, noticing the language of the birds, studying animal tracks and signs, connecting fully with the earth, I couldn’t help but nibble some young grape leaves and tendrils.

Enjoying wild grape leaves!

Wild grape tendrils and baby leaves.  High in natural vitamin c, they will keep your body strong, keep thirst at bay, and give you exactly what you need, if you want a quick trail side nibble.

Harvesting wild grape leaves and tendrils is easy, but first make sure you have a grape vine, and nothing else. Notice how I hold the end of the vine in my fingers. A very gentle tug, will stretch the tender parts, and they will pop right into my hand.

Anything bigger than these small baby parts, is best put into a cooked meal. More on the go natural goodies include – tender violets, garlic mustard, and young dandelion greens, and you have a great “meal on the go”.

Eating while “on the run” in nature is great. It’s also a great way to get closer to animals. When they sense you moving in harmony, and see you eating plants, they will often relax, and allow you to get closer to them.
