Yesterday, I was walking with Carol, sharing with her more about seeing plants with Native Eyes. Because if you are going to live close to the earth, for peace, healing, or survival, learning how to see clearly what’s around you matters.
The Tale of Two Trees.
Years ago, one of my mentors did what I now do. He showed me two trees. One I could use for making a pleasant drink, one that heals, one that is soothing. The other tree looked very similar, it has been considered for centuries to be a cancer cure. He taught me how to notice the differences between the two, he taught me how to see their medicine.

Compare these two twigs. Carol photographed them on the Great Allegheny Passage – Bike Trail where we hold many of our afternoon and evening plant walks. One of them is Sumac, the other Tree of heaven.
