Hey mate,
Today the day lillys in my front yard are 4 inches tall!
And they are delicious!
The leaves are still just small enough to eat in salads, but once they grow just a bit more, they will be too fiberous to eat.
I can dig up the roots and add them to soups. And best of all, later this spring and into the summer, I can add the colorful orange flowers to salads made with Garlic Mustard and other local edibles.
WARNING: Most members of the lily family are DEADLY. I strongly advise that you know EXACTLY what you are harvesting, and use extreme caution.
If you aren’t POSITIVE that you have a Day Lilly then leave it alone, until later in the year, when you can positively identify it. There is a fine line between an edible day lilly and a poisonous member of the same family.
BOTTOM LINE: Be safe! Be positive! Take your time, so you can have many years of happy foraging!

If you enjoy learning about Wild Edibles, Natural Medicinals, and Native Wisdom, why not attend one of our events this year! It’s a no brainer, fun and educational event that will change the way you experience the natural world around you, and the goodies it offers to you daily – forever!
